The Heart Essence of the Sublime Lady of Immortality 

Empowerment as performance art 

In the West Tibetan rituals are often seen in a religious context,  but they are perhaps better understood as a form of participatory performance art. The point is not just to seek blessings from external deities, for them to interfere with human existence. Rather it is to generate an experience within the participants themselves. 

Within the context of the performance both the ritual leader and the students are viewed as equals to  the Buddha. In the understanding that the nature of the Buddha is no different from the nature of one's own mind. 

Through the recitation of poetry and visualization, the participants are guided to the understanding that this experience is not just a temporary fiction in the context of the performance, but is actually just as real, if not more, than our ordinary understanding of identity.

About the practice 

The Heart Essence of the Sublime Lady of Immortality is a White Tara long life practice and one of the most famous and revered termas of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo.

The practice accomplishes the three Buddhas of longevity (White Tara, Amitayus and Ushnishavijaya). There are many practices that accomplish each of the three Buddha aspects individually, but the Heart Essense of Sublime Lady of Immortality accomplishes all three together, which makes it a very special longevity practice. Another special feature of this practice is that the main Buddha aspect is the female White Tara, in union with her consort Avalokiteśvara in the form known as the “Lord of the Dance” which is quite unusual.

White Tara is commonly referred to as the Mother of all the Buddhas. It is said that long ago she promised to always be born in a female body to assist sentient beings in achieving enlightenment. Her name means “One Who Saves” because of Her commitment to save sentient beings from suffering. As the embodiment of enlightened compassion and activity, White Arya Tara offers peace, compassion, long life, and prosperity to practitioners.

Thanks to the power and blessings of The Sublime Lady of Immortality, all the greatest students of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, such as Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Taye and the 14th and 15th Karmapas, were able to remove obstacles to their long lives and activities. More recently, it was the main practice of Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö, Dudjom Rinpoche, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and Trulshik Rinpoche. It is also the heart practice of His Holiness Sakya Trichen.

It was such an important practice for Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö that his biography tells us that he went to receive the empowerment ten times, then gave it all to Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. After completing the required practices seven times in retreat, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche gave everything to Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, Neten Chokling Rinpoche and Tulku Orgyen Tobgyal, among others.

His Holiness Sakya Trichen has said the following regarding this practice:

“Chimé Phakmé Nyingtik is a very important treasure teaching from Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo. It is one of my personal practices, and I do its short sadhana every day. It is a very precious teaching and a great blessing, and from my own experience even people who are terminally ill can survive through this practice.”

About His Holliness Sakya Trichen 

His Holiness Kyabgon Gongma Trichen Rinpoche (The Sakya Trichen) served as the 41st head of the Sakya Order of Tibetan Buddhism until March 2017. The Sakya order, which was founded in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, is one of the four main Tibetan Buddhist schools.

His Holiness Sakya Trichen is one of the few living Tibetan masters who were brought up and trained traditionally in Tibet before the cultural revolution.  It is a rare and precious opportunity to be able to meet authentic masters like him in this day and age, and to benefit directly from the insights of this living wisdom tradition.
